The versaility of a Cobot
Why use collaborative robots?
 
 


If you are still not convinced why you might need a collaborative robot, maybe this DEMO might help make up your mind. (Hope you like silent movies).

As I explained in my last post, maybe you have limited space, or maybe the robot will be working next to a person, or you want to do an autonomous application with an AGV, or you need flexibility to move the robot around, or you want to re-purpose/re-program the robot often, etc...

Here we showcase a Dobot CR10 SS (SafeSkin) cobot. We will see their special functionalities such as hand guiding, trajectory recording, collision avoidance with SafeSkin, block programming, running a program in auto, etc... as well as some quick integrations, such as cleaning the window and a pick and place example. 

This cobot took approximately 2 hours to setup and program the robot in various ways, such as, hand trajectory, saving points and joint movement, and fully implement two tasks. 

Traditional industrial robot arms (Kuka, Fanuc, ABB, Yaskawa...) are all fast, but once they are automated in a process, you will not dare to move them. Although... you shouldn't move them unless you want to design again the cell and call an integrator for a new production line. The advantage of these cobots is that changing the location is not a problem since they are easy to program and usually they are smaller in size so they are easier to move and quick to re-purpose (Example in the video where after cleaning the window, we moved it next to the 3D ender printer to do pick & place).

In addition, DOBOT has a defining feature over other collaborative robots which is the safe skin (Not all of their models have, it's a variant of their basic cobot).
It allows the robot to detect objects, by creating a electromagnetic field. And if the option is selected it can do automatic collision avoidance).
These robot are also a conventional cobots, in the sense that if it collides it stops. But this skin allows it to avoid collision in the upper axis of the robot. (Axis 3, 4, 5, 6 are covered). [The robot shown CR10 is similar in characteristics as Universal Robots UR10, Techman TM12, JAKA ZU 12, Doosan M1013...]

These education robot series (Magician and Magician Lite) are very versatile and come with various add-ons such as pen holder, laser engraver, 3D printer, suction cup, joystick remote control and more...
They are designed for STEAM education in mind. They promote and encourage imagination and creativity of the learner, which can be anyone with that is passionate about technology and wants to learn robotics and how to program.
You can learn the most basic thing like block programming with scratch or write python scripts for artificial vision, machine learning or even AI.
