Collaborative vs Industrial robots
Why cobots? What is a #cobot?

What is a cobot?
A cobot is a short term for collaborative robot and its purpose is to working close to a person sharing a common workspace.

But why a cobot?
You might have little space, or your application needs reprogramming often, or you need some flexibility and move the robot around, or you want an autonomous application with an AGV, etc...
There are many reasons why you might one.
But the biggest question still remains, is it really suitable? If this is your doubt then, think about just one thing, forget cycles and timings, forget how many seconds you need to automate this process, and just think about, why? Is it to substitute an industrial person or to change/support a person?  its just an addition to the already existing process line and you don't need to designate its own working space.

Pros and cons of both types of robots?

  •  Advantages of cobots
1-Safe & less space (No need for a robotic cell and can share workspace with a person)
2- More flexible (Can move it to a different zone or make it autonomous with an AMR)
    3- Easy to install
4- Easy to program & integrate
    5- Cost-effective (Fast ROI)
a- Can increase quality in the production directly or do quality inspection with a camera
     b- Increased productivity
     c- Scale business
  • Disadvantages of cobots:
1- Slower (Speed limitations by software and inherently mechanical)
2- Low payload (Designed for light tasks)
3- Not designed for line of production (Doesn't substitute an industrial robot)
4- Safety approval (Difficult to homologate collaborative application)
5- Might need assistance/Supervision (Low volume means more change of task and program)
6- Might still need fencing and radar
  • Advantages of industrial robots:
    1- Highly efficient & independent
2- Fully automated & risky tasks (Unsafe, toxic, explosive...)
3- High cycle speed (Faster robots and also more weight allowed)
    4- Higher ROI -
  • Disadvantages of industrial robots:
1- Not appropriate for low volumes
2- High cost (Base robot price is high + complete working cell with security)
3- Might need to change process line
4- Needs its own space (Delimited area for robotic cell)
5- Additional costs in design changes
     a- Expert programmer needed
     b- Engineering more tools
     c- Changing the cell
